Speed and Breakbeats

Drum and bass, often shortened to DnB, is one of the fastest genres in electronic music, typically running between 165 and 175 BPM. Its foundation is the breakbeat, fast, chopped-up drum patterns, layered over deep, rolling basslines.

Despite its speed, great drum and bass feels effortless, with a rolling groove that can be both energetic and surprisingly relaxing.

Roots in Jungle

DnB grew out of the UK jungle and rave scene of the early 1990s, blending breakbeats with reggae and dub influences. Over time it splintered into many subgenres, from the smooth, atmospheric sounds of liquid DnB to the heavy aggression of neurofunk.

This diversity is part of why the genre has remained vital and creative for over three decades.

A Global, Enduring Scene

Drum and bass enjoys passionate scenes across the world and has experienced a major resurgence in recent years, with its energy crossing over into pop and mainstream dance music. Its relentless drive is a reminder of how rhythm alone can move a crowd.
